Event Description

Russell Libby, Executive Director of Maine Organic Farmer's and Gardener's Association will give an introduction to the movie Tableland which will be showing at the Belfast Free Library on Tuesday, March 24th at 6:30 pm. The public is invited to this free talk & movie which is part of the Eat Local Challenge Film and Discussion Series sponsored by the Belfast Free Library and the Belfast Co-op and underwritten by WERU Community Radio.

The film Tableland is a culinary expedition in search of the people, places and tastes of North American small-scale, sustainable food production. From the orchards of interior British Columbia, the Napa Highlands, rural Quebec and everywhere in between, Tableland showcases the successful production of tasty, local and seasonal food from field to plate.

Russell Libby's involvement with MOFGA began in 1977 because he saw a connection between local, organic food and a strong Maine economy. He has a degree in economics from Bowdoin College and a Master's in resource economics from the University of Maine. With his wife, Mary Anne, and 3 daughters, he operates Three Sisters Farm (a small diversified farm) in Mount Vernon. To find out more about Russell and MOFGA visit www.mofga.org.

The Belfast Co-op’s Eat Local Challenge encourages community members to develop an awareness of the impact of our food choices. The Challenge encourages us to spend a larger percentage of our food dollars on locally and sustainably grown food. In this way we all contribute to the preservation of our farmlands, farmers and food security. To find out more about the March 2009 Eat Local Challenge go the Belfast Co-op blog at www.belfast.coop/blog or call Fran Clemetson at the Belfast Co-op at 338-2532.
