Eat Maine Foods!

So I bought a quart of blueberries, just thinking I live in Downeast Maine and they are fresh and good.

Problem is it's been so hot, I'm not sure of what I can make with them that doesn't involve steaming up my kitchen.

Anyone have any ideas of what I can do with a ton of delicious blueberries without making my kitchen an inferno?

I eat them every morning for breakfast - with a little farm-fresh yogurt (I love the stuff from Winter Hill Farm in Freeport) and a few tablespoons of granola. Yum! It's the same thing I eat for breakfast almost every morning of the year - except the fruit changes with the season. It's blueberry season now.

Hey Nicole!

As far as I'm concerned there's no better way to eat them than straight up in a bowl with cream/milk and sugar, throw in some peaches or raspberries to take it up a notch.

-There's recipes out there for berry pies that use fresh uncooked berries, you'd need to bake a crust off, but it would only be at most 10 minutes of baking instead of an hour. ie:

-or a blueberry tart, you could buy a prepared shortbread crust and a jar of pre-made lemon curd, and dump the berries on top, to make it easy and no-bake!

-You could do shortcake or trifles or parfaits or scoop cakes, that whole category of dessert that has a cake component, fruit component, and whip cream/yogurt/pudding component, here's one I've done with strawberries & mango:

or one I've got saved but have yet to try:

I'd maybe even do this one without cooking the berries into a syrup myself.

-and there's always smoothies, one of Jerry & my favorites is 'Blueberry Mango Fool' that's quite tasty!

Have Fun!

What about sorbet? If you've got an ice cream maker, it's easy. I've got a recipe here: http://www.mittenmachen.com/2009/07/summer-first-blueberries-perfect-for.html

Or, you can freeze the berries. Put them in smoothies or save them for baking in cooler weather.

Enjoy!
