Eat Maine Foods!

This morning out in the garden, the birds were singing, and the brood ewes were wandered around the pasture, lazily looking for a few last mouthfuls of grass before settling down for their afternoon nap to chew their cuds. Basket in hand I was harvesting and thinning lettuce, whistling to the mourning doves calling happily from the trees. Letting my imagination go back in time thinking about past generations of farmers who had performed this same task.

The silence was broken as in the distance I heard the approaching sound of two fighter jets. We live on the back side of Shawnee Peak which is in their fly zone. I could have been annoyed at the load noise that interrupted my trip to the past. But, I stood up from my task in the garden and waved to the pilots hoping they would notice me. This morning they did. I stood in awe, closely watching as they both circled back and tipped their wings my way as I stood there waving to them.

A wonderful reminder that there are many dedicated and brave men and women who are diligently working to keep our country safe. I paused a few more moments to say a prayer for those two pilots, wishing there was a way I could make them a garden fresh salad to show them my appreciation.

Have a Happy Fourth of July
