Well that is what I started out to do, prep the garden for next year. But alas my age old equipment didnt exactly work with me. I purchased a bag of winter rye which I use as a cover crop on the two parcels of garden area. The rye does two things, 1) is a green manure so when I roto till the garden in the spring it adds natural nutrients to the soil 2) covers the ground so the earthworms (yes worms) can do their magic just beneath the surface, earthworm activity is very helpful by adding natural…

The time is here when we give ourselves permission to go to town with those mini candy bars "just for a few days." It just happens to be coinciding H1N1 hitting our state.
Yet we know that sugar is one of the triggers for lowering our immune system, along with alcohol, stress and lack of sleep.
While this "swine flu" doesn't seem to be more severe than a regular, seasonal flu (with some unpredictable exceptions) it is way, way more contagious than a regular flu.
Watch this…

Made In Maine ... The Best Tempeh Evah!
I was very excited to read about Jamie and Andy Berhenu’s Organic Tempeh in Avery Kamila’s article (I love Avery’s new column, but that’s another post!) in the Portland Press Herald’s Food & Dining section last week.
Jamie and Andy, along with their two children (and sometimes Jamie’s parents!) sell their produce on Saturdays at the Deering Oaks Farmers Market (Portland, Maine). This is where we met a few years back. Jamie and Andy own and work Lalib…

So I bought a quart of blueberries, just thinking I live in Downeast Maine and they are fresh and good.
Problem is it's been so hot, I'm not sure of what I can make with them that doesn't involve steaming up my kitchen.
Anyone have any ideas of what I can do with a ton of delicious blueberries without making my kitchen an inferno?

This morning out in the garden, the birds were singing, and the brood ewes were wandered around the pasture, lazily looking for a few last mouthfuls of grass before settling down for their afternoon nap to chew their cuds. Basket in hand I was harvesting and thinning lettuce, whistling to the mourning doves calling happily from the trees. Letting my imagination go back in time thinking about past generations of farmers who had performed this same task.
The silence was broken as in the distance…

As I prepare to head off for a month of teaching in India, I am reminded of many blessings here in Maine. We are able to choose eating healthy, conscientiously grown organic produce, to support a farmer's labor of love and invest in our good health. Even with our short growing season, we have the benefits of fertile soil, reasonable growing climate, usually with the right mix of rain and sunshine to pull off and up some amazing earth offerings.
The last time I was in India, staying at a hotel o…

I have a renewed respect for single parents after the week I just had. My husband was just away for a week on an incredibly-well-deserved vacation (solo kayaking at Moosehead Lake.) I got everything done. I fed the dog and gave her her meds. I emptied the dishwasher and the dehumidifiers under the house. I fed, bathed and nuzzled my son to sleep every night. The I got up and cleaned the kitchen and finished all my domestic work by about 9:15pm, at which time I would start my other work.
I defin…

Now is the busiest time. Running a small farm while we both work and need to make time for family is challenging. Karla graduated from Champlain College, Magna Cum Laude, with a degree in Marketing. We are so proud. Derek is finishing his Freshman Year at Fryeburg Academy and enjoying friends, video games and playing his electric guitar.
I am in the garden every day planting, weeding, & rototilling, repotting seedlings for market. It's time to flush our ewes, as we start breeding in another…
