That would work. It's hard to see them in winter and not worry about them. I think some people also use a heat bulb but it has to be clear so of anything that would be bothered by the heat.
They have a little sliding chicken door and a ramp to go down to the ground. The outside of the coop is all woodsiding that matches the rest of the barn (it's an old post and beam barn), but I was thinking about putting insulation board on the ins...
Well, it's a good thing they're on the second floor since heat rises. BTW, how do you let them out? They'll probably be OK but can you tack up some insulation board on the outside of their coop?

I'm have made my on yogurt from locally purchased milk. I have a sourdough starter and make bread from it. I'm interested in mushrooms as well.
Have never made any of the items you mentioned, nor do I have any sources. I probably am not much help, except that I have a desire to learn. I have just became a vegetarian again after several years of eating meat. However, I think if I could find a local farm that I can trust I would be open to eat beef, pork, chicken in limited quantities.
