Changing the way we think of pollock

We've been working to promote eating local seafood and with that comes the need to know what fish is local and whether it's something you'd like. Last fall I was delighted to hear from the Midcoast Fishermen's Co-op that members of their CSF started asking for pollock over haddock or cod. Once members tried pollock as part of their share, they liked the mild flavor and firm texture for everything from chowders to fishcakes to fillets. The fishermen were surprised by this because although they…See More

Green Jobs on the Blue Ocean - NAMA's February newsletter and a surprising response

In February the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance (for whom I work) sent out our latest newsletter. Although I'd be naive to think that there wouldn't be opposition to our position, I was surprised to see such strong support for for agribusiness in a fisheries magazine. I've attached this response to our newsletter as published in the April issue of National Fisherman, a Portland, ME publication. What do you think?

Summer Seafood and CSF's

When I was a kid, my grandmother would pick up my sister and me on Saturday mornings and take us to do her weekly shopping. First to Uncle Andy’s Bakery in South Portland. There she would trade her fresh farm eggs for her weekly baked goods and a treat for us. Then across the bridge to Harbor Fish Market. Howard Latham would take eggs for fish, and then trade some of the eggs with another vendor while holding some aside for his family. After… Continue

Bills from the Legislature

As per Monique's request for dialog on the forum, I am posting links to 3 bills.  I'll admit to being unclear as to what some of the reporting language means.  OTP means Ought to Pass, ONTP means ought not to pass, AM is amendments, and I am going to venture a guess that Divided Report means it was split down the middle.LD 475…See More
