That would work. It's hard to see them in winter and not worry about them. I think some people also use a heat bulb but it has to be clear so of anything that would be bothered by the heat.

They have a little sliding chicken door and a ramp to go down to the ground. The outside of the coop is all woodsiding that matches the rest of the barn (it's an old post and beam barn), but I was thinking about putting insulation board on the inside and then another layer of regular plywood, etc, so they can't peck at the insulation of course.

Well, it's a good thing they're on the second floor since heat rises. BTW, how do you let them out? They'll probably be OK but can you tack up some insulation board on the outside of their coop?

I finally got 8 hens for the first time this Spring. They are in a coop on the second floor of our barn (house came with the coop already and underneath the floor is insulated, but none of the walls are). Is there anything I should do to help them prepare for their first winter? The place where I bought them said they use no heat, but with uninsulated walls and a second floor coop I don't want to risk anything happening to them.

They might be ISA Browns, I'm really not sure as a friend picked them up for me from a feed store. Their feathers are coming mostly chestnut colored with some white and they appear smallish...at least for now. They are extremely friendly and like to interact with us. They spent their first full day in the coop yesterday and appeared to prance about as if they were "house proud".

Thanks for responding, I'll try to take some photos this week and post them for anyones guess! I've got a lot to learn and really appreciate the feedback.

Sherri, sorry it took so long to get back to you. Your chicks should be fine out in the coop. Ours have been out there since birth, with heat lamps. Most nights now they don't need one, though we do keep one on when it is supposed to get really cold.

What kinds of chicks do you have?
Sherri Comment by Sherri on May 24, 2009 at 6:46am
OK I'm heading into my 4th week with my new "peeps" and I'm not even sure how old they were when they were given to us. When we got them they already had some wing feathers but were mostly downy, now they are mostly feathered with some down on their heads. My question is do they have to be fully feathered to move into the coop @ night? (Right now they are living in a large box in my living room with a heat lamp.)

As with the chick and turkey we had last year they are providing us with a great deal of entertainment. They appear healthy and love yard time each day..I've seen them eat ants, spiders and an inch worm so far! They are mainly interested in the chick starter feed and don't appear too interested in the bread crumbs that my daughters have tried to use to coax them back into the house with.

I'm sure your all busy raising your chicks as well...hope your enjoying springtime as much as I am!

I need homes for 3 large crossbred roosters, see what you can do for me!!!

Thanks for your input. I've come to the conclusion that folks mostly look at chickens as a commodity. And to preserve the whole, sacrificing one here or there is not a big deal. I prefer not to look at it that way. BTW, I found a good home for my rooster and the hens are much happier--yay!
