Dragon flies seem to come to your home or area, all on their own. If and only if one sustains the correct habitat for them. If one released a hundred dragonflies in the back yard, they would naturally spread out and scout for good hunting grounds. (Staying only where plentiful food is to be found). In my Maine-experience, of decades now, dragon flies of multiple varieties, are found in generally wetter-damper (lower lying contours or sheltered areas, without steady winds or breezes). Where small flying insects are to be found (like flies, mosquitoes, blackflies, no-see-ums, etc..) That also suggest that densely populated areas may not have food enough to sustain dragon flies, (in case of- pesticides, polluted waters, heavy soil drainage, dominant-asphalt, etc...) The earlier varieties of dragon flies, this wet summer, seemed to die off quickly, due to excessive cloudy and rainy weather-- They do need sun to energize and/or dry their wings. The normally late season variety are thankfully doing very well now, with the sunny weather.
Welcome to the conversation about how we, the people of Maine, can take cooperative action to sustainably grow as much of our food within Maine as possible - for our environment, our economy & for our health!
