Belfast Co-op seeks a dynamic experienced manager to help lead our General Management team.

The Belfast Co-op is reconfiguring its General Management and looking for a manager to help lead the Co-op team. Financial, personnel management and leadership skills required. Knowledge of Co-op principles and natural foods important. Salary negotiable.

We are the oldest and largest co-operative food store in Maine, with 2700 members, an active Board of Directors, $5.5 million in sales, and over 70 full and part-time employees. We have been an anchor in downtown Belfast for 33 years and play an active role in the community. We need someone with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, comfortable and skilled at personnel management and team building, a strong background in retail operations, organic and local foods familiarity, and a commitment to co-op principles.

Responsibilities include overseeing day-to-day computerized operations as well as long range planning with department managers and the Board of Directors (see below). Must be able to work well in a community of diverse personalities and perspectives. Imagination, initiative and creativity a plus. Competitive salary and benefits and in-store discount.

GM Duties and Responsibilities

This is not a complete list, but only meant to provide additional detail to applicants.

* Planning
o develop implement and evaluate long & short term planning
o coordinate a yearly business plan with input from dept. managers & BOD (Board of Directors)
o help facilitate strategic planning with Board
o assist dept. managers to set and attain goals for their departments
o help coordinate and implement board committee work as needed
o ensure timely implementation of goals set

* Oversee Operations and Finances
o ensure that store operations are carried out smoothly & efficiently
o ensure that the Co-op operations are in compliance legally and that sound business practices are followed
o ensure that store policies are followed consistently
o ensure that consistency and accountability are followed in all hiring, firing, training, evaluations, and pay raises
o facilitate development of a yearly balanced budget and implementation according to board vote
o ensure that membership equities are collected, invested, and disbursed according to set policy
o oversee membership development and services
o stay current with industry trends and financial climate
o attend all monthly board meetings, annual meeting, and other board or membership meetings when appropriate
o delegate responsibly

* Leadership Staff Development and Team Building
o provide leadership in carrying out our Mission Statement
o facilitate cooperation with other co-ops and organizations within our region in an effort to enhance our Mission statement
o promote and model cooperative values interpersonally and in store operations
o provide leadership in building a sense of community and purpose among staff
o be a resource and mentor for dept managers
o use positive effective communication and interpersonal skills when relating to diverse individuals ie. staff, managers,members,customers,board,business people or the public
o facilitate conflict resolution in dealing with staff, member/customer, or board issues
o provide leadership in implementing strategies for improving communication with and amongst staff and members
o motivate staff to find ways of increasing efficiency and dept. managers to be creative in problem solving
o assist and motivate staff development, goal setting and implementation
o keep dept. managers accountable for reaching or trying to reach set goals in a way that is positive and motivates them
