The Backyard Locavore Day is an educational, edible garden tour provided by University of Maine Cooperative Extension trained volunteer Master Gardeners, Master Food Preservers, and garden owners. A “locavore” is someone who eats food grown or produced locally. This event will showcase successful backyard “do-it-yourself” strategies for growing, raising, harvesting and preserving foods to become more self-reliant in meeting your own food needs. Topics featured through demonstrations, tours, talks and food samples include:
• Vegetable gardening • Square foot gardening methods • Beekeeping • Root cellaring • Drying foods • Canning foods • Freezing vegetables and fruits • Composting • Raising chickens for eggs and meat • High yield Fruit Trees
